O QUE AS MULHERES QUEREM

Como noutros assuntos, nem sempre o membro de uma minoria é um bom representante dessa minoria.

Num artigo do WomenGamers, Michelle Clay, que trabalha no estúdio Turbine Games, descreve a sua experiência como uma mulher numa indústria dominada por homens. A existência ou não de comportamentos descriminatórios por parte dos homens, as dúvidas e inseguranças ao papel que a sua “diferença” desempenha na progressão na carreira, são pedras de toque de um artigo muito equilibrado.

Aparentemente, nem todas as mulheres se revêem no ponto de vista de Michelle Clay. Uma das autoras do blog Game Girl Advance, Jane, sentiu-se particularmente incomodada com a possibilidade, deixada implícita por Michelle, de que ser mulher lhe possa conferir um estatuto especial e algumas vantagens na carreira – nem que esse comentário possa ter sido feito em tom de brincadeira.

“I can be the only woman in a room full of men and remain oblivious of the differences in our gender. It’s like a sneaky little superpower, and I got it just by showing up and doing my job. The men here don’t get this perk. There will be times in their lives when they find themselves surrounded by women, and they’ll be the ones sweating and nervously trying to make a good impression.”

“Wanting to be the only women in a group of male colleagues is a double-edged sword. If that's what you base your work happiness on, what will happen when another woman joins the team? Jealousy, and insecurity, because suddenly that which you valued is gone. I don't suggest that Michelle is advocating this; I think she's genuinely simply trying to persuade more women not to be frightened off by the male-ness of the industry. Still, I think there are some women who are drawn to the industry precisely because of its maleness.

Then there is the backlash - the feeling among some of your unkind male colleagues that you only exist there because you are a woman; and thus you are reduced to your femininity. Moreover, you become the focal point for any discussion of "what women want" - suddenly you are an expert, because you are female, and often you get put into the position of speaking for all womankind.”
